I have always attached the clips to the car first. You are correct in that you insert the piece and then push the center piece to spread the retainer. I then position the trim piece so that it lays along the top edge of the clips and then strike it with the heel of my hand moving from front to back. It snaps into position as the lower edge is pushed in by the impact. I don't remember having too much trouble with them snapping into place but one or two may have required a piece of wood and a hammer strike. A little vinyl cleaner or something similiar helps clean the contact surface as well as reduce the friction.
