According to production figures in Bjorn-Eric Lindh's "Volvo: Cars from the 20's to the 90's" there were about 10 times as many 244 produced per year as 242. Add in the large number of 245's and the 242 become pretty scarce with about 12,000 to 23,000 per year in 78-83. That dropped off to 7,887 in 84. (My Dutch friend Ron P. tells me we got all the 242 turbos though as they are worth a bundle if sent back into Europe.)
As for the IC question, of course all of the famous "flathood" 83's were 242Ti's but there were only 500 of them. With the 84 1/2 the only other year for the IC, the total number can't be more than 8000-some if every 242 were a Ti, and we know that is not the case.
Still of the dozen turbo guys I know in Florida (I'm sure there are more) at least 6 of them have 242Ti's and one guy has two. I think they are being sought and restored in bunches.
