adjusting caster[700/1990] posted by clthayer on

How does the adjustment of Caster work on a 700 series volvo? I understand that by changing the length of the control arm that caster is adjusted, but does that mean the control arms are replaced or are they just adjusted?

There is a strut rod that bolts between the control arm and car frame. There are three different lengths available. Shorter to decrease caster, longer to increase. The control arm is not changed. Most cars are fitted with medium length from factory. Difference is about 1/4" either way.

The holes in the unibody strut tower are elongated for and aft for caster adjustment. I understand there is a service bulletin that allows you to grind the holes out if more adjustment is needed.

There is a service bulletin for changeing CAMBER, by removing the front mounting stud from the strut top mounting plate, moving the strut in or out to obtain correct camber angle, then drilling a new hole in the strut mounting plate and reinstalling the stud. The CASTER is adjusted by installing longer or shorter strut rod at control arm. Elongating the holes in the strut tower should be a LAST resort if caster cannot be brought into spec with the strut rod replacement. (strut rods are about 14" long, mounts at an angle between a flange on the frame and the lower control arm, Mount at control arm has two bushings, rod is sometimes called "caster rod".
