Re: How does a VOV work, and has anyone installed one on a 240?[200/any] posted by chris herbst on

Hey Jim... I've installed one and the A/C does blow a LOT cooler in the city and on very hot days. It has made a phenomenal difference. I often see 37 degree vent temps on the highway, and low 40s in the city. Even in very hot weather.

The VOV works by varying the orifice of the orifice tube, so that the refrigerant pressures are optimized for a wider variety of conditions (i.e. city, highway, idle speed, varying temps).

The typical orifice tube has one "best" temp/humidity condition to work in, and in the rest of the ranges, it is good, but not AS good. The VOV works in a variety, so that it has a "best" range instead.

1. It is NOT expensive. Around $35.

2. You don't have an orifice tube in your particular model 240, so look into getting a different expansion valve (or a new one that works better, or whatever).

3. The 91-93 240s are the only ones that work.

Hope this helps.

Additionally, for anyone interested, you can email me for the original VOV post that I made, including what, where, vent temps, and conditions.
