Front wheel bearings[700/1988] posted by Kyle Sullivan on

Does my 1988 have a hub/bearing assbly or bearings I can actually replace? I cannot tell and Autozone has part numbers for the inner and outer bearings. I am concerned for they never asked for the engine type for that year (4 or 6 cyl) or if it had ABS.

I got the bearings from A-Z and cannot get the dust cap off. If this because there is no servicable bearings?

Thanks in advance..

As far as I know (I'm afraid I know more than I ever wanted to....don't ask why) there are only two types of front wheel bearings used for the 7 series Volvos. One is the sealed bearing, which, as you suspect, can NOT be serviced. However, it does have a removable dust cap just like the other type of wheel bearing.

The serviceable ones are tapered roller bearings, which will fall right out if you remove the castle nut. The nonserviceable ones have ball bearings, which are set back in the hub, and which will not come out without removing the inner seal. Just pop the dust cap off, and take a look. If you see a "castle nut" with a cotter pin through it, its the tapered bearing. If you see a big solid nut, its probably sealed.

One other problem you might run into....your model may have a one piece rotor/hub. It will have the serviceable tapered bearings, but you'll have a heck of a hard time finding (and paying for) a one piece replacement (if the rotors worn down). If this is the case, you're better off finding a pair of used hubs. (What a coincidence! I just happen to have a pair for sale.) Then you can use the conventional replaceable rotors like everyone else.

If you have the sealed bearing unit, be advised.....it will cost you around four hundred dollars (plus labor) to replace both fronts. The only way to convert to the tapered bearings, is be to replace your struts-as the spindles are totally different.

Good luck,

Starting in the 1988 model year Volvo used a maintenance free front wheel hub and bearing in the 700 series. The stub axle on the MacPherson strut was also changed. Some brickboarders have reported being able to disassemble this hub and service it with new bearings but I have no first hand knowledge of this. 1987 and earlier cars used tapered roller bearings in the hub. If it is not broke, don't try to fix it! --
