If the temp gauge straightened out by merely slapping the dash, then I'd first chase bad connections at the pins before soldering anything or replacing any parts.

Randy's instructions are excellent to keep if you decide to bypass the compensating board. My first repair was simply resoldering the board and pins (where they connect to the instrument cluster board). This has solved several intermittent temperature readings. The second repair was replacing the transistor and IC. This has worked for some people -- I'm one -- but not everybody.

Also be sure the three pins of the voltage regulator are firmly into the socket.

The jumper eliminates the compensating board -- which means that the temperature gauge will become a bit more "twitchy" but won't suffer from a screwed up board. --
