Speedometer cable not staying plugged in speedometer.[200/1990] posted by Rice5 on

I had to remove the instrument cluster in my 1990 240 to replace the bulbs that illuminate the instruments. The speedometer worked fine for a few days. Now it does nothing. I have a feeling that the wires are not staying in place. That blue clip doesn't seem to go back on properly. Help!

That little clip is a one-shot deal. Once it is removed, it does not ever work again. You can get another one from a dealer but, they will want to be the ones putting it on. All-Data has the part number of a new clip but it is not supposed to be sold to end users, only dealers. (The swines!)
I put a dab of soft hot-melt glue on the edge of mine and it stays put and I can remove it later if I have to without tearing it up.

This is the first I've heard of this are there any other options? We're talking about a wire right? I need to remove the cluster from my son's 89 to work on the comp board and replace some bulbs. Can I just cut the wire and splice it back together??
You mention hot glue. I assume you are holding the clip in place and hitting it with a dab of glue after the entire assembly is back in place- you must be a very flexible person (grin).

I have been know for my prestid.. prestiga... presdigigi... nimble fingers. ;->
When taking out the unit, reach behind it on the left side and just unplug the wires. It is a good idea to look first and write down where the single wires connect. The two large plugs cannot go anywhere but the correct place.
You will need to take a small screwdriver and pry the plastic holder around the wires going to the speedo off. This will break it which seems to be the idea. It is a saftey feature to let you know if someone has been tampering with the speedometer.
After the unit is removed, untangle all the harnesses behind the instrument cluster so the wires to the cluster will stretch out from the dash as far as possible. THIS will give you the room you need to slide a glue gun back there and glue the harness down to the speedo. You should have enough room on the left side to do this. After it is glued, (did I mention to use SOFT glue?), you plug the rest of the wires in and reinstall the unit.
The reason to use soft glue is you may want to take this unit out again sometime and soft glue will just pop off with finger pressure. Some of the high tempature hard glues are just a tad harder to get off. (Like impossible! :-)

Thanks for the detailed information on dealing with the speedometer attachment clip. I'll probably wander around that space in the next few days.

I just got through re-reading my instructions. I wrote that this morning before I had my morning sugar & caffine. Change all the lefts to rights and then it will work. Sorry about that chief!
