Do I have to remove the amplifier under the dash, or can I just cut the wires coming from the original head unit and solder them to the wires on my new unit?

There is no need to remove the amplifier. If your new radio came with a "kit" for the 91 740 you should have all the wiring and plugs you need for the job.

If you are replacing the door speakers consider using long metal screws to anchor the new speakers so the screws can attach the speakers to the sheetmetal of the door rather than just the composite backing board of the door panel. You would still use the sheet metal clips on the door panels, but you would drill a hole in the sheet metal to allow the screw to penetrate the sheet metal. If you don't the weight of the speaker (assuming you are using new and improved speakers)will eventually tear out the attachment on the composite material due to repeated closing of the door.
