You may find a more coherent version elsewhere, but having just done the same thing, for a different reason, here's what I did: the plastic trim piece that goes around the heat-A/C control switches and goes leftward , ending at the left edge of the ignition slot, is difficult to pry out, and probably fragile, but it did NOT break under my ministrations. I used a knife blade to pry the plastic 'somewhat' loose, all the way around, but it felt like it was stuck somewhere...and it was: just to the right of the rear window defrost switch, where the plastic trim piece meets the vertical console, there is a spring-tensioned clip holding the whole trim piece in place, and it will take some wiggling and jiggling and cussing to pop the plastic off, but it does come off, and all in one piece if you do it right! Once the trim is off, you will see the phillips screws which hold it in place. There is a little extra access to it also: above the glove compartment there is a long rectangular piece of the dashboard which also can be pried off, giving you limited visual and manual access to the right side of the heat controls. The wiring harness is tight, not allowing for much 'forward' motion, but you will be able to see, by sliding your now-visible controls back and forth, if it is responding at all. The fan control rotary switch on the left of the control head was easy enough to unplug, but since I had that area open for a different reason, I did not attempt to get the slide control unit out, 'though I did see how far it did (or did not) allow access to its back side, and it ain't much. Actually, what I was doing was replacing the little 2Watt light bulbs which illuminate the rear defrost switch, and the one for the glovebox, which you might want to replace as long as you're in looking at the heat controls, and the trim is out of the way. Whatever you do, it's usually best to bring the whole unit with you if you are buying another one, or parts for it. I noted a coating of a white grease on the moving parts of my unit, BTW. Good LUck.--PD
