I just had the same thing happen to me. When I went into boost, the gage went up quickly, but it felt like something was pulling the car backwards. I could hear a strong whoosing sound from under the hood. The whooshing sound you hear is most likely air geting pushed out a hole in one of you air hoses after the turbo. The car might idle OK, but the force of the boost pushes the air out of a hose. On my '87 760 turbo wagon, a clogged oil trap box assembly plugged up the breathing of the motor, which caused the turbo to through out more oil than normal on the intake side. The oil went through all of the hoses after the turbo. The oil sits on the bottom of the hose. After some time like this, the oil and heat from the motor eat out the bottom of the hose. I could'nt see this from above, but when I felt underneath the hoses, I found which hose was causing the fault. If it is one of the straight hoses, you won't be out much money. The 700 FAQ shows several examples of such a fault. Treat yourself to a cold Dunkleshefeweisen when you fix it.
Happy wrenching and happy motoring.
