I think the other posts will get you going. If you are interested in setting the pump timing yourself and other operations like belt replacements I recommend getting a copy of the Volvo manuals for the engine. See http://www.kencook.com/vcna/volvo.html to find the ones you need. If you call the 800 # and use your credit card you can ususally have the books in about 2 to 3 days.

Also, many of the tools for working on the engine are the same as the VW diesel, (Its a 4 cylinder version of the Volvo 6), and can be obtained from SNAP-ON. I,ve heard they have an on-line cataloge now but I haven't tried it. That's what I did for pump rebuilds, (R&R myself and had it rebuilt at a local Bosch place).

It's a great engine, I would have kept mine longer except the body was rusting away. --

I just did a trial visit to the snapon site and was able to find all the diesel service tools I had bought. ie timing gauge stock number YA8331 and injector socket S6104A. Look for VW diesel tools they usually don't mention Volvo. If you get the Volvo manual, you will be able to see pictures of the tools for comparison to the snapon pictures. --

According to the VW experts over on "Fred's TDI Page," the best and factory technician recommended way to clean VW Diesel injectors is to fill a new fuel filter with natural petroleum automatic transmission fluid (types F, A, or Mercon I, II, or III) rather than #2 Diesel every time you change the filter (but beware of synthetic and high tech ATF meant for Chrysler transaxles, etc.) If the engine is pre-warmed (obviously, you need to get yours running at least a little first), the motor will run quite well on ATF and it does a marvelous job of cleaning the system between the pump and the cylinders. The ATF in the filter quickly is diluted by incoming #2 Diesel, so the car can be driven normally almost immediately. I'm ready to try it on my '85 Jetta as soon as it needs a new filter.
