What is DOT4+ Brake Fluid?[S70/1998] posted by Vladimir on

I just looked up the brake fluid specified for my car on Alldata and it showed DOT4+. Can anyone explain to me what is DOT4+ and how is it different from DOT4. Can I just use a good quality over the counter DOT4 stuff like Castrol or ATE or do I need to get the prescription Volvo stuff?

Also, I am planning on doing the brake fluid flush sometime soon, so any suggestions, tips and comments will be appreciated. I am planning on using the power bleeder to pressurize the system without having to pump the pedal.

Thanks, --

I've just finished making a big change at the dealer I work at, and it involves the use of brake fluid. The Volvo braking system calls for DOT4+ because the boiling point of the fluid is higher than DOT4.(I'll let you know the differences tomorrow, it's at work) You can find lots of labels that say meets DOT3&4 specs, but notice it doesn't say it is Dot 3 or 4, meeting one or two of the specs doen't make it the real stuff. Our parts department liked passing out the dollar a bottle stuff at the normal ridiculous mark up. With what people are paying for services, they should get what Volvo calls for in the vechicle, The braking system calls for DOT 4+, anything short of that and you are changing your braking system, more than likely not for the good. Without major changes to your seals and such it doesn't get better than DOT 4+. --
