Wow! A really valuable lesson, and for free!
Your car is rear-wheel drive (RWD), and CV joints (constant velocity) are used in the axles of front wheel drive cars.
This is one shop to avoid from now on.
Clunks in the front of 240s come from:
- a bad ball joint
- loose nut on the top of the shock tower
- cracked shock tube (not common -- but it happened to my '83)
- Bad tie rod end (either inner or outer or both)
- Worn or missing sway bar bushing
- Worn upper strut bearing (not common)
Most likely is a bad ball joint.
