If I just hold the remote in my hand, I have to be right next to the car. If I hold it in my right hand and touch the bottom of my chin with the remote vertical and the switches facing the car, I can get an unlock from about 50'.

Apparently the cavity formed by your chin and neck make a good reflector/antenna to project the RF toward the car. Maybe also combined with your hand and arm as feed elements to the "antenna". Experiment a little to find the best configuration for you. --
