Replace front window[200/1993] posted by Harry on

Anyone ever replace a front window? My passenger-side front window was smashed by a thief. I can save lots of $$$ by buying a window at the scrap dealer and installing it myself. Looks simple enough in the Hayes and Bentley manuals. Any tips? Is it difficult?
Do I need any special tools - e.g., what type of fasteners are used to hold the interior door pannels on - they aren't Phillips head screws, and don't look like Allen screws either.

Thanks.

Arm rest screws are #30 torx. Should be one in the factory tool kit if you still have it. Remove the two rubber arm rest plugs and screws behind them. (pry the plugs out with a small screwdriver. If power windows, there is another screw at front of armrest. (no plug) Remove arm rest by rotating clockwise a bit to release the upper mount. You should be able to pull the armrest away from the door far enough to disengage the window switch. Now remove the map pocket. Three retainers on bottom side, turn 1/4 turn, pry bottom of pocket away from door. Lift the front and rear edges off of the upper mounts, and put pocket aside. Remove lock knob by unscrewing. Using a screwdriver or putty knife, pry between panel and door around perimiter to, release clips, and lift panel off of door. Now you need to remove the weatherseal the window slides in to remove broken bits of glass, just get under the rubber and pry it out. Take it out and fish all the glass bits out of the chanel, then vacuum the glass out of the bottom of door and reinstall the seal. Lube it with silicone sprey and slip it back into the door The window is hald in by two spring clips. Front mount is a hole that slips over regulator stud, rear mount is a slot over stud. Remove the clips securing the now glassless metal rail from the regulator. You can see how the clip works cause there is a third on visible in the door. The ones that hold the glass rail are accessed from the back side and are hard to see. Once the old rail is off, slide the new glass in from the outside of the window frame. Tilt the front side downward and slide the glass into the door. When the rail on the bottom of the glass has entered the door, guide the front and rear edges into the weatherseal, and slide the glass down into the door. Fit the bottom rail into the studs on the regulator, and reinstall the clips. Gife the clips a tug to make sure they lock in place. Test run the window a couple of times.
