It changes with the times...
'62 - '75:
B=Benzin (gasoline)
xx=Displacement in deciliters (1/10ths liter) - 16 =1.6 liter
A=single carb
B=dual carb
D=dual carb/high compression
E=fuelie/Hi. comp.
F=Fuelie/Low comp.
'76-'84
B=Benzin (gasoline)
xx=Displacement in deciliters (1/10ths liter) - 16 =1.6 liter
EXCEPTION: in some markets requiring small displacement engines, odd numbering was used to avoid confusion with earlier engines - to wit, a B17A engine is 1.8 liters, and a B19A is 2.0 liters.
A=single carb
E=fuelie/Hi. comp.
F=Fuelie/Low comp.
T=Turbo
'84-'93
B=Benzin (gasoline)
xxx - odd convention. the first 2 digits is as above. If the 3rd digit is a '0', it is 2 valves/cyl. A '4' indicates 4 valves/cyl
A=single carb
E=fuelie/Hi. comp.
F=Fuelie/Low comp.
K=single carb/Heron head. Weird motor. Interference design.
'93+
B=Benzin (gasoline)
x=cylinders
xx=Displacement in deciliters (1/10ths liter) - 30 =3.0 liter
x=valves/cylinder
