wagon tailgate lock cylinder fix[200/79] posted by keith on

Here's how I fixed the lock cylinder on my 79 245 tailgate. It was worn out and required serious key jiggling to work. I had a spare glove box latch with key from a 81 240 with the knob, not the button. I put it in a bench vise and punched the retaining pin in and removed the outer piece, then did the same on the cylinder retaining pin. The six key plates in the glove box lock cylinder are arranged identical to the plates in the tailgate lock cylinder and the trunk lock cylinder for the earlier 244/242s. I replaced the 6 plates and springs in the heavily used and worn tailgate lock cylinder with the ones from the glove box lock cylinder in the same order, replaced the tailgate lock cylinder and now use the key that came with the glove box lock cylinder in the tailgate. Works great! I assume the glove box lock gets much less use than the tailgate lock does. BTW the lock cylinder from the early wagon tailgate and early 242/244 trunk lock are identical.
