ZF tranny question ???[700/86] posted by reysc on

I have 224k on this car and owned it since 89 or 90.Was told that previous
owner had the tranny rebuilt the same year I bought it(had 115k by then).Question is should I have it serviced (fluid/filter changed)or leave it alone ? My mechanic just told me that I'm the luckiest ZF owner he ever meet and he would not touch that tranny cuz it is suppose to be dead by now.Fluid still looks good ,NO LEAKS,shifts smooth.I'm not complaining just wondering if some service would keep it running longer or shorten it's long life !!! Thanks..Rey

You and I are BOTH the luckiest ZF owners I know of. Mine made it to 203K with no rebuilds, then finally started slipping. I did the conversion to an AW70. Not as smooth, but much more durable.

If it were mine, I would have the trans flushed and put in new fluid about every 25,000 miles, but that's about it. The ZF is pretty fragile in some ways, and I've heard horror stories of rebuilds that didn't last a year. Flush and fill the fluid, then keep running it. Whenever it finally does start giving trouble, I recommend the conversion to AW. Amusingly enough, used AWs are cheaper, even with the conversion cost. At least in my area.

Best of luck. --
