ZF steering gearbox question[120-130/63] posted by Bradley Burland on

Just a quick question. Steering in the latest acquisition is a wee bit loose, and can most likely be taken up with the adjuster in the top of the steering gearbox. Unfortunately, I can loosen the jam nut with no problem, but can't turn the screw. If I back the whole thing out so I can clean it up and hit it with some B'laster, am I going to find any surprises (like a bunch of springs, bearings, and seals) flying out at me? Thanks.

No, no surprises. You could remove the 4 bolts and gently lift up the cover and drain the fluid and replace that. The adjusting screw is held in by a locking ring<.u>. About the only thing you can do is vary the thickness of the washer. Other than that, I don't understand why there's no adjustment, unless, as you stated, it's just gummed up.
The problems start arising when you start removing shafts. Don't do that. The pitman arm shaft that the adjusting screw is in, will come out easily. Try to get out the adjusting screw without pulling out that shaft.

Make sure you don't over-adjust. They're supposed to have play at both right and left lock. There is a high spot in the centre of the cam.
With the wheels off the ground you'll feel the high spot when turning the steering shaft in the engine bay (by hand to elminate the advantage of leverage you get when doing it from the column). Adjust so you just get rid of the play in the centre. Any more and you'll ruin the box in short order
