hi gang
i cannot pop my hood using the release cable. i managed to get the hood open manually, but would appreciate any suggestions as to troubleshooting before going ahead and replacing the cable. (i have not yet determined whether or not the cable is intact as i have no extra pair of hands around to help out). will lubing the cable be of any help?

thanks for your help

Go to an auto parts store and pick up the tool that clips onto your cable and has an orifice to spray lubricant directly into the cable sheathing.
Work the cable back and forth and spray again. Repeat the process a few times and cross your fingers for luck. My 86 cable opens fine but I manually have to push it foward in order for the latch to close properly.
It still works fine otherwise.
Good luck

Chris --

On all my 240s, and I've had a bunch over the years, I've had to lube the hood release cable.

My technique is to disconnect the cable at the front so I can swing it up near the battery. I have a piece of clear plastic hose that fits over and can be clamped down over the sheath, just at the front end. (I had to make a diameter-reducing gasket to fit between the hose and sheath 'cause the hose must be big enough to clear the cable core.)

I suspend this upright and pour a tablespoon of oil into the clear hose, then gently put air pressure on it. This forces the oil back through the cable.

Put a rag around the interior end, near the knob. After 15 minutes, or so, the oil makes it through.

I went to my local vet and asked him for a syringe with a large needle - I cut the needle tip off so the needle would be fully open. I filled the syringe with dry graphite and can force the graphite into the cable from both ends. This "tool" is also useful to lubricate door and hood hindges, locks ( cars and house ) and other areas where you want a dry lubricant. I find that wet lubes such as WD40, oil, etc only attract dirt and grime to the area - graphite being dry does not cause this build up of crud.
