B23E versus B23F[200/1980] posted by Bruce on

Can anyone tell me the differences between these two engines, the Canada B23E and the US B23F, I think the B23E has greater compression. Are the blocks identical? Also, does anyone have the url for a website i remember seeing once that describes in pretty good details the changes year by year of the volvo engines.
thanks

B23E from '79 to '82 had 10.1 : 1 compression, and either the H (140HP) or K (136HP) cam in a 405 casting head (flows a bit better than the 398 head.) Also, the E used K-Jet fuel injection. In '83, the B23E got an M or L cam that dropped power back down to the B23F level.
B23F in early '83 had 10.3 : 1 compression and an M cam in a 398 head, but a Chrysler ignition that limited power to 107HP. LH-Jet fuel injection also limited power a bit (in favor of economy) versus the K-Jet used on the B23E. Late '83 got a Bosch ignition, bumping power to 114HP. Sometime late '83 into '84, Volvo changed the pistons in the manual-tranny-equipped B23F to lower compression a bit, dropping power to 111HP (automatics kept the 10.3 : 1 ratio and 114HP.)
The site you're looking for may be John's Brickpage. Lots of good info on year-to-year changes.

Here's some info:
B23E: 10:1 compression in 1981-82, 136 hp, K cam, Pulsair air injection, K-Jet without Lambda-Sond or Constant Idle. Some had EGR. Bosch Breakerless ignition. 1983 models had 10.3:1 comp ratio, 115 hp, and A cam.
B23F: 10.3:1 compression in most 1983, and 1984 automatics, 114 hp (except 1983, in which case, it was 107 hp), M cam, LH-Jet with Lambda and Constant Idle. 1984 stick models and some of the M46 equipped 1983 models had 9.5:1 compression with 111 hp. 1983 models usually had 100% Chrysler Ignition. 1984 models had Bosch/Chrysler ignition.
