Re: Hanging the rear muffler. The Answer![700/1988] posted by Evan R on

Unscrew one of the hanger studs. Probably doesn't matter which - I used the passenger side. The studs have about 20mm of threads - MUCH less struggle than trying to get the pins on the muffler into the rubber hangers.
The trick is holding the muffler straight so that the pin doesn't crossthread. I used a factory scissor jack to take the weight of the muffler, my left hand holding the rubber hanger straight, and my right hand to turn the stud with a 17mm wrench.
And for those that mentioned worries with the center muffler hanger, the scissor jack came in handy again! Hang the muffler on the hanger closer to the driveshaft. Position the scissor jack between the driveshaft and the muffler, and crank it up. This stretches thefirst hanger enough to easily make the second hanger. It's a bit tricky to balance everything - use one hand to hold the jack and the other to turn it. when you've moved the muffler enough with the jack, use the hand that was turning the jack to slip the rubber hanger over the hook on the muffler.
This is probably a lousy thing to do to your driveshaft, but I wasn't too concerned - I probably stressed the driveshaft for all of 30 seconds, and it's a fairly gentle pressure.
Now, somebody give me a red star!
