airbag going off[700/1988] posted by Bruce Allen on

I had my airbag go off this afternoon while pulling back into the lot at work. It really smarts if you're reaching across the wheel as the little doors pop open and smack your wrist. My seaches on the bulletin board don't seem effective as I only turned up two posts that even mention airbags.
I'm somehow not complely surprised my 12yr old electrical system might do something like this. Anyone experience this and any chance Volvo might feel some resposibility? Any thoughts will be appreciated. B Allen

/// Check out the laws where you are. It may be illegal for you to possess a used/removed air bag. There are locations in the US where the police detonate any removed/used air bags they find at scrap lots. The air bag is a hot stolen item. The police claim that since it carries an explosive charge it is covered by the 1933/4 machine gun law.
You need work that carries a warranty. This is not DIY for the average shade tree mechanic. If you carry full comprehensive insurance it might be covered. Check your policy. If some one hit it in a parking lot, it rolled too far, etc, it would be covered. Hint, hint.

Did you have your airbag system tested when it was scheduled to be? corrosion on the connectors of the air bag sensors can cause them to fail. I think Volvo wanted everything inspected after 10 years (could have even been earlier)]

No test by Volvo, self test only[700/1988] posted by Frank on

There is no such thing as any scheduled test ever done by Volvo. All Volvo SRS systems have their own self test that runs everytime you start the car and if there's a problem, the control unit finds it, a code is recorded and the SRS light will remain lit.
It originally said on the doors that airbags were suppose to be replaced every 10 years but now Volvo has changed that to 15 years. I have yet to see one person who requests new airbags just because they feel it's old and should perhaps be replaced for preventative maintenance as they're not exactly cheap.
