Brake line fittings?[120-130/1967] posted by Per Schroeder on

I'm in the process of replacing my single master cylinder w/ a dual unit, and upgrading the rubber brakelines to stainless on my 67 122s

It appears that the fittings are either american standard...or...british..., as they thread easily into either. Which is it, and what exactly is the difference between these two types of brake fittings.

this seems like something I should know already...but, I don't!

I can tell you that the thread on the US items is an ordinary
3/8" - 24 UNF, same as used on 3/8" fine thread bolts.
I think the flare is 37 degree but am not positive.

(Did you hear the conversation between two ions? One said,
"I've lost an electron!" The other one said "Are you sure?"
The first replied, "I'm positive!") --

??? George, is this the same thread on later mod fittings? I had trouble getting 3/8 brass pipe plugs to go in past a few turns. I want to buy the plugs to protect the threads on stored items. I have clipped and bent the lines to get extra plugs. --

1. You can't interchange pipe fittings and tubing fittings.
You have to use adaptors.
2. According to my OLD copy of machinery's handbook, the outside
diameter of 3/8" nominal pipe (sized roughly by the inside diameter)
is 0.675" or .300" bigger than the OD of the brake tubing fitting.
It is also threaded at 18 threads/inch with a 3/4"/foot taper.
3. You may have tried to use a 1/8" brass pipe plug, which has
a 0.405" (still too big) major diameter and 27 threads/inch with a
3/4"/foot taper. This is incompatible with a flare fitting that
uses a bolt thread of 3/8" - 24 for mechanical purposes only.
All the sealing takes place in the flare so you cannot seal it
with a threaded plug unless it has a tapered end to fit
the flare fitting.
4. You could probably make one out of a 3/8" - 24 bolt in a lathe
fairly easily.

Notice that bolt threads have either a radius or a flat at the
root and crest and so they will not seal. Pipe threads are sharp
and tapered (to generate an interference fit on tightening) so that
they will seal. --

Additional to George's thread info, Note that the Volvo brake fittings are peculiar. They are threaded all the way to the end, Except for the calipers. If you fit unions with an unthreaded nose they'll only be gripping in the last two threads or so.
