Control Arm Bushings - Need Special Tool?[200/93] posted by Hip82 on

Do you need the special Volvo tool to remove the bushings from the control arms?

Is a vise for support, a mallet, and the appropriate sized socket a viable alternative?

Any tips for removal and replacement?

Thanks, Tom

Let's assume you're talking about the large control arm bushings at the rear of the front control arms. You really don't need any special tools, although I have fabricated a press tool to install the new one. To remove the old bushing, all you need is a BFH (big hammer) and a means of support. (a vice with jaws open). You could hammer the new bushing back in, (but I didn't say that) if you fashion a tool to fit in the detents(4) of the bushing. When re-installing the bushing housing, you need to torque the nut with the housing at about a 20 degree angle, which will put the bushing at about neutral with the car on it's feet. If you don't do this, you'll tear up a new bushing in short order. --
