Stumped the local Volvo Mechanic...[900/95] posted by Blane Gardner on

How about you all.

My 1995 965 suddenly started idling VERY rough on start up one day after a high RPM run to free up the valves. Before that there was an ocassional stumble at idle, but nothing big. The idle smooths out a bit after it has run for a few minutes. The power of the engine is way down, especially between 2500-300 RPM. When the engine is straining, the air coming from the ventilation fan (in recirc mode) goes down to a bare whisper. This had me thinking it might be a vacuum leak. The car has 58K on it and I switched to synthetic oil three months ago.

I had the local Volvo shop look into this when I had the 60K service done on Thursday. They looked for a vacuum leak, but found none. The engine is not setting any codes, even running this badly. They could find nothing to say what the problem is, and they didn't want to take the "shotgun" approach. I'm off to the dealership with the car on Monday. Anyone care to give any informed opinions as to where the problem may lie. --

Blane:

What you just described is EXACTLY what happened to me on Easter Sunday of this year.

Start with a compression test.

I think you spun a valve.

I hear Explorers are cheap. You could also get a Ford 5.0L V-8 from a Mustang and slip it in. Search on Converse Engineering on the web. He has a kit to install the V-8.

What Curly means by spun a valve, is the exhaust valve seals go bad letting oil past. The oil cooks on the head of the valve and hardens. After the high speed run, the valves rotate, more that usual, and are kept off the seats by all that coked up oil. Compression is lost. The only way to fix it is to remove the head, take it apart and do a valve job. That's what happened to Curly and he was able to do it himself. --

OK don't get radical yet. Essentially the same thing happened on the 850, to the point of no start. Many posts on the FWD forum.

1) Look at spark plugs. What do they look like?

2) Get a good cc deposit remover. Amsoil PI (at say 1.5 times recommended dosage) worked for mr. Put it in the gas tank with 1/4 tank or so. Drive at freeway speeds until the tank is low. Dose again and fill up with midgrade gasoline (I have a theory about some premiums).

3) Check a couple plugs...and maybe change plugs.

4)Change oil.

5)Avoid low slow, short trips at all cost.

Got a call from the dealership this afternoon. The culprits are...(drum roll, please)...a bad Mass Air Flow Sensor (Warranty Item) and a bad Coolant Temperature Sensor (I gotta pay). It could have been so much worse, just ask Tom or Jerry or Curly.

I think the real problem is that I parked too close to "Christine" once. It may be time to go see "The Excorcist" and get the technical advice I
REALLY need with this car. I'll pick up the car in the AM and see how she runs. Thanks for all the input.

You know, sometinmes I think Cynthia may have something with that computer free driving stuff. --
