The trick is shown in the green Volvo shop manuals. Remove and/or loosen mounting bolts on the rear bracket so you can come at it from behind with the torque wrench. The bracket just hangs there while you tighten the nut.

I thought the idea of putting it on the ground was to load the bushing, otherwise it could affect handling. It would seem to me that unbolting the housing removes the load off the bushing. But it sure beats the heck out of my method. Specially when you get the wrench jammed between the fram and the transmission and you spend a half hour getting it freed...

Well you are right except I might describe the car-on-the-ground-before-tightening as setting up a no-load or neutral load on the bushing to minimize wear, not so much for handling. I think with a lot of these suspension pieces, you either use ramps (high ground) or just estimate the correct torque based on recent experience. Getting a torque wrench on all the rear bushings can be just as much a challenge. And as far as I am concerned, the only point to tightening the rear control arm bushing is to avoid a clunk.
