Re: Rear Bushings: Can I Do Them at Home?[200/75] posted by gregg on

well, well, well,

here's my story Ray!!!

I just did this job this summer on my 75 brick. I too was advised not to try this at home!!!
Anyway, I found the big bushings very frozen in by rust and did not have THE TOOL to remove them. I don't know if it would have gotten them out.
My rather crude but effective procedure was to burn enough of the rubber out to get room for a hacksaw blade--almost split the outer metal casing--finish it with a cutting wheel on a dremel tool-- collapse the casing--and it then falls right out.!!!

Of course, I was frightened by the fact that I was in the middle of nowhere and I had to get this big new one back in. Before starting, I went to the hardware store for a collection of 1/2 inch bolts of various lengths(6,8,10,and threaded rod just in case). With plenty of really big three inch washers and a particularly useful 3/4 to 1 1/12(I think--Take the bushing to match the size!!!) reduction fitting from the plumbing dept. Iwas able to fashion a close replica of THE TOOL.

The idea of course was to get it started and press it in by just tightening the nut and bolt. If I ran out of thread as it got smaller just change to a shorter bolt.

Eureka info------

As I was working to get them out, I had the bushings sitting overnight in the freezer. When it came time to put them in, A nice coating of antisieze compound, and with sweaty palms,---THEY SLID RIGHT IN!!! I had to use the Rube Goldberg setup for the last inch or so, and it pressed them in just fine..

Not a fun job to do at home--but not impossible either..

P.S. Beware of the triangle --there is an up or down orientation

GOOD LUCK--Gregg --
