Warmer air out center ducts, cooler air out outer ducts[700/1989] posted by Leon Ramseur on

My 1989 780 air conditioning system is blowing warmer air out the center ducts than the air that comes out the outer ducts. The air coming out the outer ducts is considerably cooler than the air coming out the center ducts. Anybody know how to fix this problem?

One of two possibilities: 1. you are low on refrigerant. The evaporator will be only cold part way across and the way comes form the evaporator and passes through the distribution part of case will result in the cold/warm split you are seeing.
2. the evaporator has a detached internal divider. the evaporator flow is from the inlet into one end tank then across 1/2 the evaporator to the other end tank and then back through the other 1/2 to the same end tank that it entered and out through the outlet. The originating end tank has a divider and in rare cases it can come loose and let the refrigerant bypass resulting in a reduced amount going throug the evap and again the result is split heat cold out of face vents.
The likely cause is #1 and additional refrigerant will cure it. You can tell if it is low by doing a "feel test" on the accumulator while the system is running. If it is low the line going back to compressor will not be cold. If the evap divider has detached the line will be very cold.
