Steering Box Replacement[1800/72] posted by BC MacGregor on

The steering box inn my '72 1800ES is shot. The box looks as though it's the same unit as those used in the non PS 140 cars, save for the steering input shaft. I have a good 140 steering box, and would like to change input shaft so it will work in the 1800. Can this be done?
Thanks

Check carefully - you may find that there are some differences in the boxes - perhaps in the way they mount to the frame member.

In any event, the best approach is to get your box rebuilt - new bearings and seals on the steering shaft are easy - and readily available from any bearing house as is the seal on the lower end of the pitman shaft. The hard part is the vertical bushing that the pitman shaft rides in. This bushing must be pushed out with a press and a new one installed. Then it must be reamed to the correct size by the machinist. Wear on this bushing is what usually kills the boxes. --

The question you have posed is one of the most asked questions for P1800's.There is an article describing Power steering conversion for P1800 using V164 power steering box but the work is quite involved. Rebuilding the box involves getting new roller bearings for the "input shaft"- the worm .

The Drop arm bushes need to be of the correct material and that is oil soaking brass that needs to be cut to the correct size. This material is used in bushes for the starter motor as well and it is unfortunately expensive.

The most problematic of all is play in the roller, The roller gets loose on its mounting on the drop arm and I really dont know if anything can be done about this other than getting a new drop arm.

Good luck
