Hi,

I've just re-assembled carbs after re-build and am wondering what the concensus is regarding choice of damping oil. It's been over 15 years since I last had SU's but I seem to remember using ATF and later trying Marvel Mystery Oil(whats the mystery ??). What do you guys use??
Appreciate the input.

The quick answer is "something, use the same something in both".
The not quite as quick answer is "I've used just about everything
from air to 3in1 to 20-50 motor oil; I've even heard of people using
gear oil in them when they were trying to get the car to pass smog
tests. The car still ran."

If you've got your car running well, then you can sit down and
think "do I want the car to lean out or rich out when I open the
throttle. If I want it to rich out, I should put something thin
into the dashpots. Like 3in1 or jack oil. If I want it to lean
out when I open the throttle, I'd put something thicker in, like
20-50 (or heavier) or mm oil." The "Neutral" stuff is atf fluid,
but I think at this point it is kind of hard to get a volvo factory
stock so that such things actually have a real impact.

I would get everything else setup the way you want, like the timing
and valve clearance and the needles and seats and such. Set it up
with the ATF, then after you've got it running the way you want,
play around with different fluids until you like the way the
car runs.

I personally like jack oil.
