unable to maintain idle[700/1989] posted by Daniel E Moylan on

My 1989 740GL (non-turbo) wagon has had a long term problem I have been unable to solve. It will not run at idle for any length of time without stalling. It seems to drop a cylinder, the RPM drops and the car stalls. For some reason this problem occurs mre often in humid weather conditions. Lately, the car seems to be dropping a cylinder while diving, actually decelerating from about 45MPH. It does continue to run however. I have replaced the plugs, plug wires, rotor, dist cap and timing belt. I would certainly solicit any and all ideas as to how I should proceed to eliminate my problem without replacing every part and sensor on my vehicle. Thanks to one and all for any forthcoming assistance. --

I had similar symptoms except mine would just die or cut in and out.Would always restart. Turned out to be a bad power stage. Might get one cheap from a salvage yard and see if it fixes the problem. Also check the hall sensor leads where they exit the distributor. Good luck
