Loud vibration when braking at high speed Pt. 2[900/95] posted by Michael Hale on

After reading some of the replies to my previous posts (thanks), I did some further diagnosing. The vibration sound (again, similar to the sound of a semi-truck's engine brake) comes from the front right at speeds above 55mph when applying light brake pressure...If I press hard on the brake, the noise goes away. For those not familiar with my previous post, I replaced the rotors and pads in an attmept to fix this problem (also because the rotors were worn out). Any light you could shed on the subject would be appreciated. Thanks.

The front lower control arm is held fore-aft by the bushing at the rear mount point for lower control arm.
On 95 and later 960/s-v90 this bushing is a vertical axis bushing.
If that bushing has its rubber cracked then the wheel is oscillating fore-aft as you apply brakes.
Have someone drive by slow and then apply brakes as you watch front wheel. Do this on both sides. See if the rh wheel moves fore-aft much more than the lh side.
You can test for this bushing being broken by prying up and down on rear mount area to see if it is broken.

Found the problem(s): a.) the bushing you mentioned is torn up pretty badly b.)there appears to be a gap between the pad and the caliper frame (that bolts to the strut assembly). I'm going to fix the gap problem by getting a spacer plate onthe top of the frame like the what is on the bottom now (it doesn't make sense for their to be just one stainless steel spacer plate on the bottom...I think some mechanic didn't put it back as it wasn't there when I replaced the pads.) The gap between pad and frame looks like the same spacer as the what's on the bottom would fit perfectly and eliminate movement up and down of the pad. About the bushing... is a press needed to get it in? Is this a DIY job? (I've done a ton with Volvo 240s and 960s)...Do they make a polyurethane version of this bushing? Thanks for your input!

I think the spacer you are referring to is the anti-rattle spring and it should be on the bottom and there should be a more simple stainless piece where the pad touches the pad bracket at top.
The bushing is easily pressed in/out with the special Volvo tool but could likely be done in other ways. The bushing has an orientation to the way it goes in.
