They do run pretty warm; if it's overheating, though, the resistance could be too high when it's hot. As I recall, there should be around 9 volts at the coil[or the coil end of the resistor] with the ignition switch in the run position; if the voltage is low, either the coil's pulling too much current, or the resistor is faulty.
