U Joints[200/1984] posted by Larry Gray on

Hi,

How's the best way to diagnose worn U Joints? I hear a heavy "clunk"
sometimes when I'm starting off, never any other time, which I had
been told was the exhaust system hitting the underbody. Recently,
I replaced the entire exhaust with Volvo parts and
had ample time to make sure that the noise wasn't coming from
here.

The Swedish Engineering Newsletter mentions the U joints, but I don't even know where they are or what they do. Thanks for your help.

Larry

Larry -- not to deny the possibility that your U-joints are bad, but a loud "clunk" upon takeoff is also a symptom of a bad rear trailing arm bushing. The bushing clunk can also speak upon takeoff in reverse. It's just one clunk upon takeoff. Would the U-joints clunk several times until they get up to rotational speed? The "clunks" have a different sound -- the bushing clunk is very deep, heavy, metallic, and sounds frightening as though something in the rear suspension is broken (which is what the bushing problem is, in essence...)

Crawl underneath and check out these bushings. If they look dried up and cracked, I bet that's your problem (or one of your problems...)

Good luck.
Rob
