In order to remove the engine pan with the engine in place, you must do the following things:
1. Remove the distributor
2. Disconnect the exhaust system
3. Lift the car for work space, and support it from the unibody rails near the front jack points.
4. Disconnect the engine mounts.
5. Hoist the engine off of the engine mounts. Cherry picker recommended.
6. Now that you have the engine suspended, disconnect one of the steering u-joints.
7. Disconnect the front sway bar,
8. Support the front suspension with a floor jack.
9. Remove the 4 bolts which hold the front suspension to the unibody.
10. Lower the front suspension far enough for the pan to clear, remember that you still have hoses connected to the car.
11. Now you may remove the engine pan bolts.
12. It is a little bit tricky, but now you remove the engine pan. You will have to be carefull to get the pan off over the oil pick up.
I replaced the engine pan on my wife's car after she drove over piece of broken concrete, and wrinkled the pan in the area of the drain hole. The drain plug would not seal. I was lucky that she didn't break off the oil pick up.
