Automatic Transmission[444-544/1965] posted by Armando Framil on

I have a 1965 PV544 in very good condition. The transmission however needs and overhaul and the clutch should be replaced. I am considering swithching to an automatic transmission and would like to get some guidance on what it take t to do it correctly. For instance would a transmission from another volvo model (120) fit. Is there and adapter kit available? Are there any articles/literature describing how to do it.
I would appreciate any feedback and shared experiences on the subject before I start this project.

Armando,
There was a post about this on the swedish classics billboard several years ago. A gentleman had injuries or something of the sort that prohibited him from using a stick shift. While I haven't done this conversion, I have altered several 544's putting an overdrive into one, and putting a small block chevy and automatic in another, and so on. I can tell you what I do know of the process. The first thing you will have to do is to cut and reshape the tunnel over the top of the transmission. The auto has a wider physical size and you must make room. Doing so decreases the amount of floor space for your feet on both sides of the car. This means you must now move the gas pedal. It is also irreversable. Once you cut the hole in the floor, you will always have the hole in the floor. After you get the auto in place, you will have to have a drive line cut to fit. Not a big deal, but it is a couple of hundred dollars. You will also need to hook up a shift mechanism, probably something setting on the floor in place of the current shifter. You will also need to put in an oil cooler up front near the radiator and run lines back to the tranny. The automatic from any volvo from 1975 (early, with b20) and earlier will bolt up if you have a b18 in your car. Most of these trannys were realitively weak compared to the stick shift. If you do this conversion yourself, plan on spending over a thousand dollars for the misc parts, plus the price of a used and likely "unknown" transmission. If you are going to send it to a shop, add another $1500 to that. I would urge you to consider rebuilding or replacing the manual transmission along with the clutch. You can get a clutch kit for a couple hundred bucks, and a used tranny for about the same. It is the simpler, least expensive way to go. I'd hate to have you start in on the auto, cut up the car, and then abandon the whole thing with regret.
Good luck,
Leonard
