Power Steering Shudder[900/1997] posted by Steve Scaro on

I just bought a 97 960 with 64K miles. At low speed when the steering wheel is turned rapidly (Such as when turning into a parking space) I feel a "shudder" in the steering wheel.

My shop says that many of the 960s do this and that there is a hose kit that is supposed to correct the shudder, but he also said the kits only work some of the time.

Thoughts? --

The GM power steering pump on that car is known for a pressure pulsation at low pump speeds.
The hose the guy is talking about is an effort to break the resonance from the pulsation.
There is also a special fluid called Pantosin that is used to help with this.
The problem shouldn't be there if you were to kick it out of gear and hold throttle to get revs up to 1200 or so while doing that same maneuver.
This shudder is a bother it is not a problem that will break something.
