No, but it's best to clamp the hoses at the firewall so you don't lose more coolant than necessary. In a shop where we have compressed air, I blow out the valve (and heater core) from the firewall side before replacing it so coolant doesn't spill inside. Otherwise use alot of rags inside the car.
