Buck 'n' lurch. (Woah, boy)[1800/70] posted by Justin on

Hello all.
I have an issue with my 1970 1800 I am having difficulty with. There are many symptoms, but I suspect they are all related. The car has the d-jet FI system. Bless it's underrated, ornery heart...
Once the car warms up, it tends to skip at lower rpms. The tach will dip and return to normal in sync. This does not happen as much at higher rpms. It will miss while accelerating thru about 3500, at which point it stops doing it as much.
This seems like an issue with the throttle switch. IT is just over 1 year old. How fast do these wear out?
Also, it runs hotter than usual. Still low, but the temp will soar when I'm stopped at a light on a hot day. The gauge rises very quickly, then slowly goes down once I am moving again. Is this an issue with the gauge or the cooling? The thermostat is rated at 180 degrees. It also heats up fast in the morning. This would have been nice in the winter, but it's getting hotter by the day here now. The radiator was totally boiled and rodded out about 2 years ago.
The points and plugs are around 2 months old and were properly adjusted at that time. I plan to go the electronic ignition route before long, anyway. Fuel filter is el-cheapo Fram job, but ipd had the Bosch ones on sale so they are on their way.
So why the buck-and-lurch? This sounds like textbook throttle switch, but I'm not so sure. I'm going to look at it again later today. Any other thoughts?
As always, any help is appreciated very much.

There are probably two problems contributing to the bucking. First - at around 3500, the issue is likely dirty throttle switch - they get dirty faster than they wear out. open the cover (carefully to avoid losing the little rubber corner pieces). Clean the wiper contacts with points cleaner and reassemble - check setting for idle. This process will work for a while - but eventually, wear will force you to replace the switch.
The second problem - missing at idle may well be ignition - especially if you still have points in the car. Get rid of them and install an electronic ignition (be sure to get a tach drive circuit for your Smiths tach). On worn distos, oil vapor comes up the shaft past the bushings and fouls points quickly.
Second possibility - also highly likely is dirty injector trigger contacts -the ones in the bottom of the disto.. Remove two small screws on side and slide out the contacts. Clean with white business card - slide between contacts. Use a little points cleaner if you want. Do not use abrasive on these.
Running hot - could be radiator that needs attention - either bugs and trash in the fins or crud inside. Or it could be loose fan belt or eroded water pump fins, or sticking thermostat. need to check out the whole system. Be sure to pressure check to make sure your overflow tank cap and the radiator cap are holding pressure.
