Possible Steering Problem[200/1985] posted by John on

A few weeks ago, I replaced the starter switch and not knowing what I was doing, I accidently moved the steering column about an inch or two in a back and forth motion after undoing a couple of screws I did not have to undo. Now, (this condition may have been there before and I didn't notice it) the steering seems to be a bit weird. The wheel does not readily return to a center position on its own. It will come most of the way back but then must be turned back the last quarter turn. On a big (tight) turn, I can let the wheel go and it will stay in the tight turn (forever) until I manually turn it back. Now, I am very new to the '85 DL so maybe this is normal but I have a sinking feeling it isn't. Anybody have and experience similar to this or is anyone able to set me straight. I think some setting straight would be good right now. Thanks --
John

John --

One posibility is a bad lower U-joint in the steering column -- where the column attaches to the rack. The upper joint may be binding (it's under the master cylinder), but more often the lower joint is troublesome.

And if it is a bad U-joint, you had nothing to do with it. --

Those U jts Don mentioned give a bunch of wierd symptoms such as you mentioned. One of the families 700 series feels like there are lumps when you turn it. Daughters 200 series felt like the power steering wasnt working. All because of the U jts. Have had luck lubing the heck of them and they go again. New ones are rediculous. Have also removed them and soaked them in lube (oil etc.)
