how does exterior trim attach?[200/85] posted by Steve Merelman on

I'm planning to replace the missing trim piece on my rocker panel, just below the doors. The missing piece left behind a lot of brackets, some of which were sheared off to stubs. I can't immediately figure out to remove/replace these things. Anybody out there fool with these before?

Also, the chrome beneath the rear passenger side window is gone. This attachment looks a little simpler, but has anybody done this one?

Thanks in advance,

The black trim piece is held on by a series of clips that are available from Volvo at $.75 to $1 each...they use a plunger type fastner with 4 fingers that expand...you set it in the hole and push in the plunger (use the butt end of a screwdriver) and that expands the insert so it grips inside the hole...kind of like a sheetrock picture frame hanger...get the new type (grey as opposed to white)and when you do it clean off any dirt and if you see rust use steel wool twirled into a thin shape to clean out the hole and rust then use primer or touchup paint w/ a brush to cover the metal, but be sure to get it inside the hole as well on the back side of the metal...a pipe cleaner wrapped in paper towel or thin cloth does this well or also the foam tipped tape head cleaner swabs -cut 'em lengthwise to fit)

The chrome piece under the window is attached by a 3M foam emblem tape and also the ends wrap around the edges of the door or window opening to hold it in place...be sure to use 2 layers of masking tape on the surface of the chrome before using any tools on it to bend it back in place or to crimp it tighter, this will prevent scratching the chrome. I recpommend a layrer of the 3M tape under the edge of the chrome to secure it to the door surface...make sure you clean the surface with denatured alcohol (get some of the Medi-Wipes that nurses use to wipe your arm before a shot, they work really well) before application of the tape..

To prevent scratching the paint when sliding the new trim onto the clips, my buddy uses waxed paper...he lays the wax paper down first and holds it on w/ masking tape, then punches the holes for the clips and then inserts them and slides on the trim. Then he tears away the waxed paper, it will tear at the holes and come away clean......
