positive traction axel[200/86] posted by Greg Kepner on

According to the manual, and on the dealer instaled option list, a limited slip differentil is available for the 240. I checked this out with the local Volvo agency in Eastern Washington and for only $2000! I can special order one. Has any one had any experiance with the ofical Volvo part or is there a better or more reasonably priced after market unit available? Although my Volvo dose well in the snow, I live a long way out, on a road that seems to be last on the plow list and could use all the help I can get.

Regards

Check out the Turbo Bricks web site http://www.turbobricks.org/
It has a pretty good article in the modifications section about Limited Slip differentials.
The 240 uses a common Dana (i think) type rear and there should be several available to fit the rear.

Gordon nailed it. Any good 4wd place or other place that messes with rear ends can throw in a Dana 30 limited slip. All for under $500 or so. Thank God some parts on our cars are 'mercan. --

Uhh, not exactly "'mercan", more like metric 'mercan. I changed the rear axle and gearset in my 242, went from 3.52 and open diff to 4.56 and LSD, all for about $425 and a weekend of my labor. I found a LSD axle in a junkyard and talked the guy down to $175 from $300 then bought the gears and install kit from Reider Racing for $250. The gearset is for a Dana 30. It appears that Volvo took a Dana 30 diff over to Sweden and made a metric version of it because the Volvo diff is all metric threaded and the Danas are SAE threaded. Anyway, I now have 100 mph in 4th gear @ 6k rpm with rally tires, perfect! Next I need to find out if the aluminum case on an M47 can be exchanged for the steel case on an M45/46. I've heard it can be done. What I've been told is that the M47 can't take much hp because the bearings won't hold up. My engineering mind tells me this is because the coefficient of thermal expansion is different for aluminum and steel. In other words the case winds up being longer than the shafts inside after expansion due to heat takes place. This leads to more bearing play and eventual bearing failure under racing conditions. If I was to put a steel case in in place of the aluminum case I may then have a durable 5-spd for rallying (rather than laying out about $6k for a Getrag GrpA box). Ideas? --
