Vent Vacuum Switch Hissing[200/1991] posted by Don H on

Another new and unique problem has begun.

Seems that the recirculation push switch on the center console has taken to hissing most of the time when left in the out position. The hissing stops when the switch is pushed (when the ventilation system is put in recirculation mode). Sometimes it just hisses ad infinatum, others it hisses for a bit then stops. When the car is started with the switch in the out position it usually hisses then stops, but if the switch is pushed then released the hissing will not stop.

Always the intrepid, I took apart the center console yesterday expecting to find a loose, disconnected or split vacuum hose. None were found. I did my best to trace through the connections and everything seems to be connected just fine. I observed both the lower heating vents and the defrost vents operating just fine, and with no extra hissing. My guess is that the switch itself needs replacing, but I'd like to be as sure as possible before I take apart the console again.

Any ideas or suggestions are always appreciated.

Thanks!
