740 GLE non turbo rpm sensor[700/1987] posted by Ron Woytowich on

Read that my starting problems might be caused by the RPM sensor. In humid weather and hot weather, car may not start or may cut out after running a while. Where is this sensor exactly and how hard is it to change?

It's on the baseplate of the distributor, which is at the back of the valve cover, right against the firewall. A straightforward but annoying job, requiring a small 8mm. wrench, long legs, and double jointed wrists to get the distributor plate off. Or send your eight-year-old in over the engine!

Mark the distributor's position first, and don't forget to disconnect the signal lead from the bottom of the distributor (where you cannot see it) before you unbolt the plate. The connector is delicate and might already be broken and the cause of your trouble.

The sensor is riveted to the plate and the new one should be riveted on, as well. Do this part well.

The part is about 70 bucks Canadian, so check the connector first, it was the problem for me once.

Good luck. It's amazing how much better the car works when the ignition system gets a signal to work with!

Ron-the rpm sensor is located at the back of your motor, directly
below the distributor-cable runs up to your cable harness and then
over to plug in.[IF your sensor lead has a YELLOW band-change the
sensor-older version and now being with a WHITE band].
A Mirror/on your toes job. IT senses a signal from your ring gear-
the gear has pins to trigger the sensor. Best of luck
