Rear Speakers in 245[200/1986] posted by Chris Starling on

A few weeks ago, someone posted a picture and description of their 245 which had a pair of 4" speakers in the rear, each mounted above the wheel wells, forward of the back seat such that they were over the shoulder of the passengers. This is a brilliant spot for speakers, and I'm trying to do a similar install myself. However, I'm looking for some implementation details.

What's the best route to run the wire for the speakers?
I'm thinking it looks easy to run it down the body cavity, following the wheel well, then across, under the door threshold, around the seatbelt cover and into the front seat, through the front door threshold and into the dash area. However, how do you get those black plastic door threshold pieces off without breaking them? They look like they're glued on. :(

Did you use the factory piece of fiber board?
Or did you cut a new piece out of MDF and re-upholster with the original vinyl? The original piece looks like it'll crumble the minute I cut into it.

Thanks a bunch!

The pic Don Foster posted is very similar to the stock rear speaker location that Volvo used for the rear 245 speakers...

You could use the original panel, and if you are worried about discombooberation of the original lutefisk based board inside the vinyl just get some 1/8th inch aluminum sheeting (surplus aluminum siding actually works very well)and use a decent contact adhesive to attach it to the back of the lutefiskboard panel to stiffen it..precut the speaker hole in the aluminum and then cut the lutefiskboard from behind using a matte knife until you hit the vinyl...stop then remove the lutefiskboard that is the inside of the speaker cutout and cut an X across the vinyl and fold the edges back inside the hole and secure with glue. Mount the speaker from the front and TA DAH! Yer done...

The factory speaker wire routing is from under the dash lip across to the outside kick panel and then under the lip of the carpet (yes you must remove the lower door sill shield) and then one pair goes up into the C pillar to the closest speaker and the other across under the bottom of the rear seat to the other side...the wires can be fished up into the C pillar...

I recommend that you use a bead of glue to secure the grille to the mounting frame as it can get knocked off when the rear seat back is put into the cargo position...

There are several deep 3.5 and 3 inch speakers that can fit that have better power handling abilities than the cheapo 4 inch size...Blaupunkt 402's fit well, as do BA's but a square grille fits easier than a round one and matches the front door speaker grille...
