PRV 6cyl Questions[200/1979] posted by Jim MacKenzie on

Two questions regarding my engine. 1. Would someone enlighten me as to the purpose for the electrical plug/socket which is covered by a plastic cap and located on the passenger side near the distributor. Is this for some sort of diagonistic routine? 2. On the top of the transmission just behind where the transmission bolts to the rear of the engine there is a nylon tube fitting. It seems that some sort of hose should be connected here but I can't figure out where the hose should be routed. Thanks for your help.

The plug is for a device Volvo calls a Mono-tester. It attaches to the plug which is actually a permanently installed inductive pickup which makes voltage pulses as two pins on the flywheel pass by. The tester has a #1 plug wire pickup and calculates and displays the timing on an analog display.
The barbed fitting is the vent for the trans. When that gearbox is used in other manufacturers' trucks they put a hose on it and run it higher on vehicle to prevent water entry. If you plan on fording deep streams while chasing wild game in the Kenyan plains I suggest you do the same to your fitting...............
