My 89 740 fuel injected 4-cylinder engine died as I pulled into garage after 18 mile run with no hint of a problem. Absolutely, it could not be restarted. Last year, I resoldered all fuel pump relay connections when similar problem occurred which cured problem (recommended fix from Brickboard). I tried to resolder again but no help. I then replaced relay with a new one - again no help. Engine spark looks good. Full tank of gas about 40 miles ago. Any suggestions would be appreciated. --

Tom --

Did you check the main FI relay? It is, I think, mounted on your right shock tower. It's a black plastic box, and should be next to its twin -- which is for the electric fan. In fact, these two relays are the same and can be swapped -- and that's a good, quick, and cheap diagnostic.

This relay is called the "suppression" relay.

Is there an rpm/crankshaft position sensor on your car...an rf cable from a sensor on the bell housing to a connector on the wiring harness at the firewall.

If you have a late model 89 it might have an IDU you can check the codes for an operating sensor. There is a known defect on later B230FT sensors (yellow band on cable is the old one that goes bad, a white band is the new one) where the sensor or cable goes bad and no signal, no fuel pump start.
