Hi Michael
I think you will find that the diaphram servo for the heater box has split. if you pull down the lower dash trim above the pedal`s and look up at the heater box, there are two servo`s one has two vacuum line`s going to it, the other only has one, the two line servo is the most common one to fail, it can be replaced insitue but it is not easy. you can confirm which servo is leaking by pinching off the vacuum line`s one by one till the hiss stops. good luck....

Keith,

Thanks for the advice! I tried to locate the diaphram servos, but could not seem to find what you were describing. The only thing with hoses attached had a line running in from engine compartment (I think it's a pcv line) it tees off under the panel and 1 line runs into a black obelisk type item, the other trails off out of sight.
At any rate I pinched these lines and found that the noise quited down. Further inspection revealed that the T-connector of these hoses had a break in it. I replaced the T and the noice disappeared. So I think I was lucky in this case rather than have the diaphram servos go as you described.

Thanks for your help- It got me looking in the right place!
