neutral start switch[200/1988] posted by ROY A. RABOLD on

For the last couple of days I have had to giggle the shift lever (automatic transmission) to start the car. Today it would not start either in park or neutral. I guess the switch has finally quit working. Where is the switch located to I can replace it? I have a 1988 240DL.

Roy,
I just came from this job, so I believe I can guide you.
That switch is located under the plastic shifter cover. Remove two phillips head screws and detatch the cover from a small clip at the rearward end. Pull it up out of your way (it won't come completely off the shifter, though)
Look for the switch on the right side of the shifter. Notice there are two small ridges on the switch; one of the shifter. The ridges on the switch correspond with the "P" and "N" transmission positions. When the switch is properly aligned, the ridge on the shifter, which slided along with it, whould match up with these ridges.
Ther are two screws on the right side of the switch used to adjust the switch position.
The car should only start in either "P" or "N" (for obvious reasons).
If after checking/adjusting the switch the car still will not send spark to turn over, begin checking the wire from the switch to the top of the transmission. Sometimes this wire gets caught between things and grounds out near the switch.
Next, go under the transmission and check this wire where it appears above the output housing. Make sure it isn't cut or caught so as to graound out.
